As Tropical Depression Cristobal moves north through the Gulf of Mexico, Tampa Bay will face possible flash flooding and heavy rainfall this weekend and early next week, according to the National Hurricane Center.

Cristobal, which is now the 2020 Hurricane Season’s third named storm, has already inflicted damage as heavy rainfall and severe flooding have been impacting parts of Southern Mexico and Central America this week.

The storm is expected to emerge in the waters of the southern Gulf of Mexico late today, then move north through the Gulf of Mexico this weekend.

With maximum winds near 35 mph, an upgrade to tropical storm status is likely as Cristobal moves through the Gulf over the weekend.

It is likely that storm surge and tropical storm watches will be issued later today to parts of the Gulf Coast regions of the United States, according to the report.
