Wednesday, May 5: Cinco de Mayo

It's Cinco de Mayo, when we celebrate Mexico's defeat of the French army by drinking tequila, wearing sombreros and cheering on masked lucha libre wrestlers. Here are my picks for the best of the fiestas:

Red Mesa Cantina and Push Ultra Lounge are teaming up for a block party, complete with a margarita bar, plenty of cervezas, and live music and luchadores (3-11 p.m., 128 Third St. S., St. Petersburg, free, facebook.com/redmesacantina).

The Hut hosts jalapeno eating contests, prizes for best-decorated sombrero, the limbo, live music, and of course, drink specials (4-11 p.m., 514 Channelside Drive, Tampa. $5 cover, thehutbarandgrill.com).

MacDinton's (always looking for an excuse to drink, those Irish) offers an all-you-can-drink tequila and Corona bar, Mexican music, and free sombreros for the first 100 people in the door — which means get there early. (5-8 p.m., 405 S. Howard Ave., Tampa. $15, macdintons.com).

Many more events after the break:
