The seemingly never-ending winter looks like it finally may be behind us, and that forecast in the 70s means that I can now, in good faith, finally

declare it “spring.” So, this week, whether it is your spring break from college or a regular 9-to-5 work week, take advantage of this newfound warmth and get out to a spring training game.

For baseball fans, Florida is the best place to spend the month of March. About half of the major league teams are visiting for the month, so be a good host and get out to the ballpark.

Our local boys, the Rays, will have you spending your day down at the lovely facility in Port Charlotte. Everyone seems to love the new park, so if you haven’t been there yet, make it a point this week to head south and see Crawford, Longoria, and the rest of Maddon’s men.

If you’re more interested in staying in the Bay area, there are plenty of teams to choose from. The Blue Jays are nestled in a nice little park in Dunedin, the Pirates and Orioles are just a short trip over the Sunshine Skyway to catch an afternoon game this week. If you’re looking for a bit more, head to the gorgeous spring home of the Phillies on US 19, and sit on the berm or find a seat at the tiki bar. And, if you’re one of those people, there is always that pinstriped team on Dale Mabry. I hear they had a decent season last year.

Also, there is the option of cruising to Fort Myers for a Red Sox game, or spending a day at Disney and checking out the Braves. And if you’re a bit more adventurous, or just a die-hard fan, take a weekend journey to the other coast and take a look at the Marlins, Mets, and Cardinals.

Wherever you are, welcome back the Florida weather this week with a spring tradition. For the college students, wake up in time for a 1 p.m. game. Businessmen, go ahead and play hooky for the day, or just sneak in a few innings on a long lunch. Parents, go ahead and give your kids a day off from school. Buy the peanuts and the Cracker Jack and spend some quality time in the sunshine with your family

I’ll see you at the game.
