Ask any Tampa Bay artist older than 40 about old Ybor City, and they’ll inevitably land on a story about how the district used to be home to a myriad of art colonies. And while the neighborhood hasn’t gotten too far away from those roots, it’s pretty heartening to see a new house gallery and working studio opening on E 6th Avenue.
General Admission hopes to be “a place for developing bad ideas, ambitious dreams, and the pursuit of honest making with no judgment,” and this week makes its debut with “F.R.I.E.N.D.S,” a ridiculously-stacked show with giants of the scene on the poster (Jay Giroux, Bask, Tes One, Ryan Lagasse, George Goldberg, Creative Loafing Tampa Bay cartoonist Cory Robinson, and Claire Casper are just a few of the more than two dozen names listed). Rarefolks, a company connected to the parcel owners, will also have work on hand.
“We wanted a place where the work speaks for itself. Whether it’s a painting, a sculpture, or a brand system, it’s all visual language. General Admission is about letting those things coexist without needing to ask for permission or define the category,” venue founders Giroux and Keith Burnson wrote in a press release.
