Captured in a medium three-person group shot outdoors, the middle band member has vibrant pink-and-blonde dyed hair, glasses, a black-and-white skeleton print top, and a red varsity-style bomber jacket, draping arms around the shoulders of both bandmates. On the left, a member with shoulder-length curly dark hair and chest/arm tattoos wears orange overalls over a light tank top; on the right, a member with a mustache wears a short-sleeved light-blue patterned button-up shirt over a black t-shirt, set against a dark reflective building backdrop under bright daytime lighting.

It’s not right to call Doc Martin a producer.

“I’m a DJ who makes records,” the man born Martin Mendoza told the Powertools Podcast over the summer.

A godfather of the West coast rave scene, Martin has been playing house music since its inception in the mid-’80s and has more than a few sets that are required listening (start with his 2001 “Essential Mix” on BBC’s Radio 1, or a 1991 set at the L.A. rave Gilligan’s Island), and this weekend he spins for three hours in St. Petersburg to help Brian Busto and DJ Three close out their Serious Soul x Hallucienda residency.

The gig at The Nest Martin’s first set for Serious Soul in a dozen years.

“Doc is a mentor to Three and one of my biggest inspirations, we respect the hell out of him,” Busto told Creative Loafing Tampa Bay. “Honestly, we never imagined it would take this long to bring him back.”

Tickets to see Doc Martin, Brian Busto, Dreez, and Slick Vizion at The Nest at St. Pete Brewing Co. in St. Petersburg on Saturday, Oct. 17 are still available and start at $24.80.
