A marauding band of pirates, wenches, celebrities, and politicians entertained thousands of people as they marched through the streets of South Tampa on Saturday for the 100th anniversary of the annual Gasparilla Parade. Bright skies and free-flowing alcohol fueled the energy of the hoards of screaming bead-hungry parade goers.

With the masses of people yelling “beads, beads, beads,” the thumping of dance music from the floats, and the occasional cannon fire from the Krewe of Gasparilla, walking the parade route on Saturday was deafening. The air was sweet with the smell of fried foods and sometimes rancid with the odor of spilled stale beer. The sun was bright, the air was warm, and revelers were a little nutty. Over 50 crews interspersed with dignitaries, politicians, marching bands, and military units took part in the nearly three-hour event.

According to news reports, there were 1,500 law enforcement officers and security cameras in and around the celebration to deal with the massive crowd. Arrests were down from 2014.
