A new Broadway musical inspired by the life and music of Alicia Keys opens the first of 15 Tampa shows tonight.
“Hell’s Kitchen,” which runs through April 4 at the Straz Center, tells a loosely autobiographical story of Keys’ upbringing in 1990s Manhattan.
The musical follows Ali (Maya Drake, pictured), a 17-year-old navigating a complicated relationship with her mother while trying to figure out what independence and creativity actually look like.
The show leans into that ’90s New York backdrop, pairing it with a score made up of both new songs and familiar hits from Keys’ catalog, including “Fallin’,” “No One” and “Girl on Fire.”
Directed by Tony Award nominee Michael Greif, with choreography by Camille A. Brown and a book by Kristoffer Diaz, the production has earned a New York Times Critic’s Pick.
Tickets start at $65 for ‘Hell’s Kitchen,’ running March 25-April 4 in Tampa.
