The Dalí Museum in St. Petersburg is already home to the largest collection of work from the late artist Salvador Dalí, but now the space wants to more than double its size.
This afternoon, St. Petersburg’s surrealist hub unveiled plans for a new $65 million expansion, which it hopes to see completed by 2028.
Located at 1 Dali Boulevard, the Dalí is currently a 20,000 square-foot museum, and the proposed expansion would add an additional 35,000-square-feet to the building’s south side.
The new space would be home to new flex galleries, a learning center for students and an event space for social events, says a press release.
“We are creating a museum that will stand with the great cultural institutions of the world, prepared to meet the expectations of today’s visitors and the curiosity of those who will walk through these doors decades from now,” said Hank Hine, Executive Director of The Dalí Museum. “This is a defining moment for our institution and for St. Petersburg. It’s not about being bigger; it’s about being bolder. For more than four decades, The Dalí has led through innovation, empowering visitors to see differently and think expansively. This next chapter allows us to move beyond existing limitations and create space, intellectually and physically, for deeper learning, more ambitious experiences and broader access.”
The new proposal currently has support from Visit St. Pete-Clearwater’s “From Visitors with Love initiative,” which is funded via tourist development tax funds.
“The Dalí Museum is a cultural engine for this community and a cornerstone of St. Petersburg’s global identity,” added Brian Lowack, President and CEO of Visit St. Pete-Clearwater in a statement. “Investments like this strengthen the identity that defines our region and attracts visitors from around the world.”
The Dalí says groundbreaking for the project should begin in the fall of 2026, and it will remain open throughout construction.
