Ask Dream Momma: Dual Identity

Huh? Well. In other words, we all start out toting a lot of input around about who we are, mainly from family systems and societal pressures. Right? We’ve all been there, even Dream Momma. You know, the Shoulds, Oughts, and Musts of Life. The True Self assassins if you will. Yet we do manage to escape and at some point, unless we’re totally crushed, embark on our journey of self-discovery.

Remembering that sex is determined by the father, gender issues can be a whole other topic, especially in the psyche. Sex is not gender. Carl Jung, believing in the balanced psyche, thought we were all androgynous (dual-gendered) and then came under the psychological influence of families and cultures. That’s important to remember.

Here’s why, we need to have all the aspects of our nature and personality fully developed, that’s what determines our True Self which in turn determines our Life Purpose and Spirituality. We all have been innately given the capacity to act and respond in both a masculine and feminine way. If the female lacked her masculine counterpart she could not protect her babies very well. If men didn’t have a feminine to tap into they could never be tender. Get it?

Back to the dream. This dream is telling the dreamer that during her psychological journey through tunnels and lighthouses, she has sorted out all the familial and societal input and has been left with her psyche fully whole. The dream is also telling her she has shunned, not abandoned, her feminine who has been seeking recognition from her. She states, “ I love her but I also love the male interest that died” which is all fine and well, no need to abandon your masculine but now it is time to fully embrace and honor your feminine. Red stilettos and chocolate await! How wonderful!

Dream Momma

“Dear Dream Momma, I dreamt it was a post-apocalyptic world where a group of survivors, including a male version of me, was being led by a mysterious woman. We face a series of obstacles and the group dies one by one, including a male love interest. We traverse empty subway tunnels and I manage to climb a lighthouse as the sole survivor. Suddenly the mystery woman floats before me encased in a beautiful golden aura and says "It was you all along...the one I've been searching for." She then explains that all the survivors were apart of her, and she was using them to find someone, me. I tell her that I love her but I also love the male interest that died. She says that is fine, he's also apart of her, and he appears behind her as a ghostly image. They both take my hand, and the dream ends.

I remember feeling a vague sense of warm happiness when I woke up. But I have no idea what the dream means or what it might symbolize. Any suggestions?”

Dream Momma is so happy to return to her blog for Creative Loafing with this remarkable, journey dream. Why is it remarkable? Because it describes, in a symbolic nature, the individuation phase of psychological development and the relationship between the animus and anima.
