Breakdown: Red Sox rout Rays 12-5

The Tampa Bay Rays were on the end of another ugly loss, falling 12-5 to the Bahstahn Rehd Sahks at Fenway Park. Starting pitcher Jeff Niemann had another poor start since returning from the Disabled List and the Rays failed to capitalize on a few chances to rally back after the damage was done.

The Rays wasted no time getting to feisty left-hander Jon Lester. B.J. Upton singled in the lead-off spot and promptly stole second for an immediate threat. Carl Crawford snuck a one-out base hit by the infielders, scoring Upton and advancing to second base on the throw. Evan Longoria struck out looking before Crawford swiped third and Carlos Pena walked. Sean Rodriguez struck out to bring an extended top half of the first to a close.

Those damn Rehd Sahks came back and took the lead in the bottom half of the frame. Jeff Niemann, shaky in his last two appearances, got out to a good start by striking out lead-off man Daniel Nava. Jason Bartlett made a great catch on a line drive from J.D. Drew to get two gone quickly. A walk issued to Victor Martinez made the David Ortiz homer that followed twice as damaging; Ortiz curved a 3-2 fastball around the right-field foul pole to put the Rays in the hole. Adrian Beltre smoked a fastball over the fabled Green Monster to make extend the Boston lead before Jed Lowrie struck out to end the inning.
