In June, Clearwater announced it wanted to pay artists to create murals in downtown Clearwater.

This week, it announced the winners.

As part of the Community Redevelopment Area, the city has partnered with five businesses (locations below) to have murals painted. Ideally, these murals will show different perspectives on the city's history — and its future.

More than 100 artists applied; of the five selected, three hail from Tampa Bay. Here are the five the city chose.

The Tampa Heights wife-and-husband team known to us as Illsol — that's Michelle Sawyer and Tony Krol — will paint one mural; Justin McAllister and the Gibbs High mural club will paint another; and St. Petersburg's Cecilia Lueza rounds out the local artist contingency.

Julia Morrisroe, from Gainesville, and Florencia Durán and Camilo Nuñez, from Uruguay, round out the artists. Durán and Nuñez will paint a multi-story mural on their "canvas."

Work starts Monday at some of the following locations:

  • 512 Cleveland St. (Cecilia Lueza)
  • Creative Contractors, 620 Drew St. (Illsol)
  • The Flag Company, 1360 Cleveland St. (Justin McAllster/Gibbs HS mural club)
  • Parking garage, 28 N. Garden Ave. (Florencia Durán and Camilo Nuñez)
  • Parking garage (facing Station Square Park), 33 N. Garden Ave. (Julia Morrisroe)

The city hopes to unveil the finished projects in January.
