FIVE QUESTIONS
How can any of us even think about dating in these times of porn politics and gender nonconformity?
Wars have been fought for love, and of course, sex still rules. The need to date isn’t going anywhere no matter how triggering your Twitter feed feels. I’ll grant you that it might feel harder than ever. But it’s not. Dating has always been hard. And I know even my asexuals have questions. Bring ’em.
What makes you qualified to answer these questions?
I’ve been writing about relationships for a long time. I wrote a dating column that started in the 1990s and went on until internet dating became a thing in the early 2000s. I may be a married lady now, but along the way I’ve many variations of relationship. Perhaps most importantly, I’m not coming at this from a place of predefined right and wrong. You tell me what you want, and if I don’t have an answer for you I’ll phone a friend, or pull in some other help. I’m not going to define your happily ever after like a therapist once did to me. After I told her about a romp I’d had, she scolded me for putting out too quickly. Uh, too quickly for what, exactly? I wasn’t trying to husband the guy, just have a bit of fun. I informed her of her mistake and made that our last session. I won’t do that. After all, as the Dalai Lama says, “Love is the absence of judgment.”
How often will the column come out?
Regularly. Probably once every other week.
What’s off limits?
You can ask anything you’d like to know for yourself, the more specific the better. For instance, if you tell me your crazy ex liked butt plugs, I’m not seeing the crazy. If they wanted you to like them and you tried but hated anything in your butt and this then became a sore spot (yes, puns will happen), then we have something to work with.
What’s with the name?
Do you know how hard it is to name an advice column. We can’t all be named Savage. And Dear is overdone. Love, Confidential gives me a sign off and gets us off (see about the puns) to a good start. Dear Love, makes for a friendly exchange. As does closing…
