Tara Brach, whose name you may know from her super-duper-popular podcast, gave the three classic Buddhist gateways (truth, love and awareness) a — well, not new, exactly, and not different, exactly, but sort of an updated spin in her book, True Refuge. In the book, Brach explores way to heal suffering but also seeks out ways we can be happy even as we're suffering. So, yeah, she's not denying the classic Buddhist sentiment so well-stated in The Princess Bride ("Life is pain, Highness — anyone who tells you different is selling something.") as she is saying yes, life is suffering but you know what? That doesn't mean you have to be fucking miserable all the time (that's, uh, our spin on what she says).

The Body Electric's book club, which meets every month, will discuss this book at its next meeting. Tombolo Books' Alsace Walentine leads the group.  We're telling you now so you have time to get and either read or start to read the book. What a perfect thing to do on a rainy Sunday afternoon, right?
