Halloween party weekend is upon us with a horrific number of events — enough to make an events editor go insane! You might have noted from our cover story this week, that Friday, Oct. 28, is the much-anticipated Rocky Horror Lotion Show featuring Poetry n' Lotion w/The Winter Sounds, Palantine, Fri., Oct. 28, 9 p.m. doors, New World Brewery, Ybor City, $7. Read Leilani Polk's cover story here.
Other hallow-happenin's in Ybor City deserve a mention. Of course, we'll start out with the obvious: Guavaween returns to Seventh Avenue 3 p.m.-3 a.m., but with two major changes. This year the annual bash has been reclaimed by the Ybor Chamber of Commerce from CC Events, and the Mama Guava motorized parade returns. Word is that the vibe is changing, but we’ll see if the monster can be be tamed. Eve6 and Tonic headline; $12. For parking/transportation info, call HART’s information line at 813-254-4278 or visit tecolinestreetcar.org; event info at ybor.org.
Ybor landmark The Castle is a scary place on a regular night, but when Tampa’s philanthropic boys club, the 13 Ugly Men, takes over the 25-000-square-foot Goth mecca with their huge Freakshow shindig on Oct. 28 at 7 p.m., bougie horrors wait. Intoxed-Botoxed cougars in sexy nurse uniforms, buff Frankensteins and other yupscale creepsters will party down to benefit the Academy Prep Center of Tampa. Tickets on sale at 13uglymen.com.
The Bricks of Ybor has been known for having some of the best parties in Ybor, so it seems natural to include its This Ain’t No Guavaween fete on Oct. 29. The event includes a Halloween costume party (last year's event is pictured above) with winners announced at midnight. DJ Cub, the mix-master of all sounds cool, provides the soundtrack for the night (bricksofybor.com). Last and maybe most, the Centro Asturiano, located outside the fray of Ybor proper, offers a more convenient and counter-culture event on Oct. 29, the Rock Your Horror Music and Art Fiasco, which will feature live music from Zoogma and Greenhouse Lounge, Halloween-inpsired spins in the Voodoo Lounge DJ Tent and an outdoor art gallery from Tempus Projects — plus acrobatics, theatrics, fire dancing and LED Hula hoop performances (whew). $20, $15 in advance (rockyourhorror.com).
