‘Paws for Literacy’ finds kids aged 5-12 reading to shelter dogs at Humane Society of Tampa Bay.

When it comes to going into the outside world and interacting with others, the hierarchy of things I trust and believe in, goes from dogs, to kids with adult humans bringing up the rear.

The Humane Society of Tampa Bay offers a chance to connect with the best of the triumvirate every Tuesday and Thursday when it hosts “Paws for Literacy” where kids aged 5-12 pull up a stool, and stack of books (or even their own homework), then read to a bunch of furballs.

“[The program] helps our shelter animals feel more comfortable, making them more adoptable. Children develop their reading skills and empathy for animals in a nurturing environment,” the nonprofit said.

Humane Education Manager Giannina Varchi can set your kid up (813-774-4311, gianninav@humanesocietytampa.org), and the Human Society is doing temperature checks, social distancing and using facemasks.

Tuesdays and Thursdays, 2:45 p.m.-4 p.m. Human Society of Tampa Bay, 3607 N Armenia Ave., Tampa. humanesocietytampa.org
