The Tampa Bay Lightning entered the new year coming off the best December in franchise history, and hoped to continue that success when they took to the ice against the New York Rangers Saturday night. The Rangers came into the game with the best road record in the NHL, while the Lightning sported a 2-0 record against the Broadway Blueshirts; the Bolts took this one 2-1 in overtime.
The Lightning jumped out to a quick start in the early going, getting good pressure on Rangers goaltender Henrik Lundqvist. Those opportunities did not result in many shots on goal right away though. The Lightning would get on the board first, however, when Dana Tyrell beat Lundqvist on a flubbed shot to give the Bolts a 1-0 lead. The goal at the 13:03 mark of the first was his 4th goal of the year. The Lightning would take that 1-0 lead into the room after 1, out shooting the Rangers 10-7.
