Page Turners: Tampa Bay's Literary Happenings

Wordy whirls for the bookishly inclined.

Bob Suren will be in town over the Fourth of July weekend and he’ll be promoting his new book, Crate Digger: An Obsession with Punk Records, during his visit. He’ll read from and discuss his memoir at Planet Retro Records in St. Petersburg on Friday, July 3, 7 p.m. Permanent Makeup and Pillow Talk will also perform. The next day, tune into WMNF at 5 p.m. for his guest DJ slot. Then on Sunday, July 5 he’ll head to Tampa's Microgroove at 3 p.m. If you can't catch him earlier in the day, he'll be Mojo Books and Records for an after-hours reading at 8 p.m. Nude Tayne and Rahim Samid will also perform. All shows are free, but donations will be collected.

The Clearwater Library Foundation is offering an eight-week memoir-writing workshop at the Main Library starting Monday, July 6, 10 a.m. to noon. The class, which is open to writers of all levels, covers how to share personal experiences and shape them into narrative form, and provides opportunities to gain experience through brief in-class writing assignments. Annemarie Micklo is the workshop facilitator.

Will Eisner was one of the great American masters of comic books and graphic novels - in fact, the comics industry's Eisner Award, given at the San Diego Comic-Con every July, is named for him. Bob Andelman, local author and Eisner's authorized biographer, will present a fascinating talk showing rare slides from his life and 70-year career Tuesday, July 7, 6:30 to 7:30 p.m., at the Jimmie B. Keel Regional Library.

Book Swap of Carrollwood has relocated to Main Street Plaza, 11738 N. Dale Mabry, Tampa. The store will re-open in its new digs Saturday, July 11, 11 a.m.

Largo Public Library presents its premier local author showcase and reception Saturday, July 11, 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., in its Jenkins Community Wing. Attendees will meet a variety of published authors from the local community and learn about their latest projects. Authors will also sell and sign copies of their books.

Registration is open for Camp Wordier Than Thou, an evening summer camp for adult writers. Events will take place August 9-16 and will include workshops, seminars, social events and a two-night camping trip. Writers can pick and choose the events they’d like to attend. This camp is organized by Wordier Than Thou, a local literary arts organization, and sponsored by USF St. Pete, which will host all workshops and seminars. Campers can register online here.
