University of Tampa sociologist Bruce Friesen will share insights from his book, Moral Systems and the Evolution of Human Rights, Wednesday, April 1, 10:30 a.m. to 12 p.m., at UT’s Macdonald-Kelce Library. His book, released this year, provides a compelling account for the vast amount of change in moral systems over time, the human imperative to create meaningful moral systems and why human rights have emerged as the world's first indigenous, global, moral system. This event is free and open to the public. Friesen will answer audience questions after the presentation.
Grownman Brand in Seminole Heights hosts the 2015 Cuban Sangwiche Show, a celebration of Tampa’s visual arts, music, literature, film and more, which runs April 1 through 19. The opening night celebration, which takes place Wednesday, April 1, 6 to 10 p.m., includes a performance of “Epic of the Sandwiche Cubano,” by Tampa’s poet laureate James B. Tokely. The show will feature an evening of poetry, Saturday, April 4, 7:30 p.m. The line-up includes Linda Alexander, Silvia Curbelo, Melissa Fair, Sarah Myhre and Rhonda J. Nelson. Cost is $5 at the door. The Misfits Slam Team, a group of competitive spoken word poets led by Giddy Perez, will perform Saturday, April 11.
Heartwood Retreat Center in Bradenton offers a free, three-hour workshop on “Creative Journaling for Personal Growth” Thursday, April 2, 10:30 a.m. This workshop introduces the power of journaling for emotional balance and self-growth, and offers the techniques and tools to expand our relationship with the written word as a path to healing and discovering who we are and what we believe.
