One of the things I believed early on was that sounds have meaning (Crack! Puff! Boo!). Language must have started that way. Later on in school I read lines like “The moan of doves in immemorial elms / And murmuring of innumerable bees.” Recently, when thinking about our president, I realized that a pile of interesting words — many more than used here — rhymed with his name. Make your own list; there’s just something about that sound! Hence this rondeau, and don’t forget to check Jeanne’s drawing.
The Unnamed Man
There stands the man who made the jump
from dodge-the-tax to prime-the-pump
so now he shakes his little hand
at presidents in Pakistan
and pats the old Queen’s royal rump
Beneath him unwed mothers slump
in poverty while smugly plump
and greased with Mar-a-Lago tan
there stands the man
Though gays and immigrants may grump
and there’s no chance he’ll drain the swamp
or build walls on the Rio Grande
we pray all voters understand:
You want a name that rhymes with ‘dump’?
There stands the man!
