One of the best things about Halloween season is pumpkin spiced everything. One of the better things about the season? All the scary things. But perhaps the best part of pumpkin-spiced season is the way local theaters serve up delightfully scary (and scary-ish) theater faster than a hipster barista can make a skinny cold-brewed pumpkin spiced latte machhiatto chai with extra caramel salt (no whip, extra foam). We have three weekends left before Halloween, and three fantastic Halloween-esque shows happening, so you do the math. First, there’s Psycho Beach Party. Think of this bizarre show like this: A 1950s psychodramas, 1960 beach/surfer film and a 1980s slasher movie had a threesome, and somebody got pregnant. That child? Yeah, it’s this play. Next up, what happens when a notorious killer meets up with rock music? Lizzie happens, that’s what. David Jenkins, the tireless mastermind behind Jobsite, brings together musical and theatrical talent to present the story of history’s most notorious violent femme. To round out the not-really-kid-friendly but oh-so-awesome trifecta of theater, freeFall’s Assassins presents nine presidential assassination attempts, some successful and some not, a la Sondheim. That alone makes it surreal.
