33rd Annual Freakers Ball Skipper's Smokehouse's legendary costume contest/music event was the big bohemian bash before the first official Guavaween. Each year, Skipper's spend a couple of weeks revamping the stage and the property in a new Halloween theme. This year is "The End Of The World: Yours And Mayan" and the Skipperdome is transforming into a Mayan temple plaza with ziggurat and sacrificial altar. Gorey Stories Just about all literature lovers love Gorey. His ominously amusing sendups of death, insanity and depravity definitely inspired the clever braintrust behind Tampa’s Jobsite Theater. The company has stoked its Halloween cauldron and is throwing in a new recipe of the theatrical ode Gorey Stories. Jobsite staged the musical with book by Stephen Currens and tunes by David Aldritch, in 2007. The 2012 revamp should dazzle with new costuming and makeup cues by Katrina Stevenson, an all new set by award-winning tech designer Brian Smallheer, props, video projections and puppets (!). Plus a three-piece band performs an encore mini-concert of Gorey-inspired tunes by the Tiger Lillies. Gorey, incidentally, shared a box of unpublished stories with the band before he died. Guavaween: The Many Shades of Ybor will feature a new indoor music festival with 30 bands performing in six Ybor live music venues, including Centro Ybor and the annual Costume Contest — $1,000 for first place, $500 for second place and $250 for third place. Halloween The Capitol Theatre in downtown Clearwater’s Cleveland Street District cult movie series continues with a screening of the 1978 classic Halloween on Wed., Oct. 31, at 8 p.m. Directed by John Carpenter and starring Jamie Lee Curtis in her big-screen debut, Halloween slashed the way for a horror film sub-genre. Halloween at Honeymoon Island The state park's 15th annual Halloween in the Park offers a safe alternative to trick or treating with face painting for the kids, fortune telling for the parents, games, storytelling with the Dunedin and Palm Harbor libraries, food and other fun. There is a scary trail for the older children and adults complete with a haunted house. Bring a flashlight, a bag for collecting candy and bugspray. $10 donation includes 10 free game tickets. Halloween Horror Nights Explore a maze of haunted houses, including an abode inspired by AMC's The Walking Dead. Penn & Teller and Alice Cooper also have also lent their off-kilter expertise to this year's doin's, along with street-roaming "scare actors” — even creepier than the ones you encounter at the Ren Fest (who may or may not reek of patchouli). Hallowings Haunted Carnival: Benefit for Seabird Sanctuary If you’ve ever seen a pelican tangled in monofilament, blocking traffic as it struggled to free its beak from beneath a wing, then you’ve seen the tall order nonprofits like the Suncoast Seabird Sanctuary face. The sanctuary, a 40-plus-year-old nonprofit, is the place you call when you see something like this. If the bird is in rough enough condition, they’ll take it to their bird hospital in Indian Shores. Open to the public (and free), the sanctuary rescues and rehabilitates common seabirds as well as hawks, owls, and albatrosses, which they famously did during the 2010 BP oil disaster. The nonprofit has recently been battling financial troubles and accusations of labor law violations, and some media scrutiny. Regardless of how everything pans out for the sanctuary, the birds still need to nosh – and the tons of fish these guys eat isn’t free. That’s why on Saturday, the sanctuary is throwing Hallowings Haunted Carnival a very colorful and jam-centric Halloween bash featuring Dean Johanesen (of The Human Condition), Noah Broe, Shoeless Soul, and the Josh Magwood Band. Horror at the Pass/John's Pass Halloween Happenings Halloween events throughout the weekend coincide with the Pass' seafood festival, where fireworks go boom at 9 p.m. on Friday. Also that night, from 7 to 11 p.m., a Halloween Block Party more tailored for grown-ups with full liquor and adult costume contest occupy the main food court, with music by DJ Infinite Skillz. On Saturday, dress the kids up for a children’s costume contest at Windworks. Trick or treating will take place from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on both days. Spooktacular for Kids In addition to arts and crafts, decorating cookies and cupcakes, games, a trick-or-treat scavenger hunt and a costume contest, children and their families will now be able to take Spooktacular hayrides – military style. The newest attraction “Wake the Dead” will join “Tangled Terror,” “Pharaoh’s Tomb of Revenge, “Declassified: Project Alien,” and “Fright Theater 3D: Trapped in Time.” These haunts are rated on a skull system, with scare levels ranging up to seven skulls.
