Murals Downtown Tampa recently lost a mural that featured just Tom Brady and Ray Charles on it for some reason, but that doesn’t mean there aren’t plenty of other murals around the area for us all to have strong opinions about. Credit: Photo via Shine
Believe it or not, there are still mural-less walls in St. Petersburg, and in its ninth year, the Shine Mural Festival (stylized “SHINE”) is gonna do something about it.

For nine days, four international muralists—Loretta Lizzio (Australia), Dave Donza (London), plus Canada’s Andrea Wan and Bryan Beyung—join a lineup of four more U.S.-based artists and six Bay area locals to paint blank walls (and also update old ones with new art).

A kickoff party happens next Friday-Saturday, Oct. 13-14 at 1934 2nd Ave. S, with art walks (Oct. 14), happy hours and art shows happening in the days after. Workshops are also part of the festivities, including a two-day cross-disciplinary session at the Morean Workshop Space (Oct. 21-22) where Tampa Bay poet Tyler Gillespie invites participants to watch Miami’s Douglas Hoekzema (aka Hoxxoh) bring his geometric design while creating their own ekphrastic copy.

Shine Mural Festival happens at various locations in St. Petersburg from Oct. 13-22—a mural map and more information are available via stpeteartsalliance.org.
