For the last 18 years, Tampa Museum of Art (TMA) has proudly stood with the queer, and the movement continues this month with the return of the Pride & Passion gala.

The Shakespearean, “Romeo and Juliet”-themed affair will showcase artwork that has been inspired by the LGBTQ+ community. The gala is a reflection of the museum’s support of programs that create a safe place for the LGBTQ+ community to express themselves and to be seen.

The Renaissance-inspired showcase serves as a way to educate the public about members of the Tampa Bay community who have been marginalized because of their “ethnicity, race, gender, gender identity or sexual orientation through artistic expression.”

On Saturday, May 31—the day before Pride month begins— from 8 p.m.-midnight the museum will host the party, dubbed “Timeless Tragedy: A Night of Forbidden Elegance.”

Along with the captivating artwork, there will also be a high-energy performance from tap-dancing “Rupaul’s Drag Race” season 17 star Suzie Toot, known for her period-specific performances.

Tickets for Pride & Passion at Tampa Museum of Art on Saturday, May 31 start at $125. All proceeds from the event directly support the Museum’s Art Space and Connections programs— an initiative that uses art to help people struggling with mental health or trauma. The ticket includes access to the galleries and any performances taking place. There will also be an open bar and hors d’oeuvres from local LGBTQ+ friendly vendors.

The TMA says the LGBTQ+ community plays a major role in the art market in Tampa Bay and around the world, so Pride & Passion seeks to showcase their impact in all forms of artistry.

While this is only a one day event, the museum supports the LGBTQ+ community year-round by encouraging conversations about marginalized communities and being vocal supporters of Gay Pride.
