Tampa Museum of Art’s new exhibition—“HerStory: Stories of Ancient Heroines and Everyday Women”—opens today and depicts the story of women from the ancient world through modern times by including objects that present female myths and stories from Aphrodite and Athena to Amazon warriors.
“There is nothing quite like this outstanding exhibition HerStory, part of one of North America’s great collections of ancient art and certainly the most celebrated ancient art collections in the southeastern United States,” Michael Tomor, the TMA’s Executive Director, wrote in a release.
“HerStory” is on view through January 9, 2022, and the museum—located at 120 W. Gasparilla Plaza in downtown Tampa—will release a series of educational offerings over the course of the exhibition’s run.
The museum installed the exhibition this year to coincide with two centennial anniversaries. The first being of the TMA itself, which was founded in 1920. And the second is of woman’s suffrage through the implementation of the 19th amendment to the U.S. Constitution.
TMA reopened to the public on June 1 and implemented safety procedures that align with local mandates and CDC guidelines (capacity limits and requiring facemasks to be worn by all staff and guests).
The museum encourages guests to purchase tickets online, before their arrival to avoid being turned away due to capacity. An adult admission ticket begins at $15, but the museum has discounts for children, students, seniors, educators and professional artists. Anyone on food assistance may also enter the TMA for free.
