Having been mainly virtual in 2020, Tampa Repertory Theatre announced that its 2021-2022 season consists of six shows all live, in-person and sprinkled between different venues around Tampa. Before the season starts, the nonprofit is hosting a “FriendRaiser” benefit party at a private residence in Odessa on Saturday, Aug. 28. A suggested donation of $75 includes drinks, appetizers and live entertainment.

In addition to the productions listed below, a still-to-be-announced play is happening from June 2-19 at the University of South Florida. Visit tamparep.org for more information.

  • Every Brilliant Thing The one-person dramedy about depression and mental illness takes place after a 6-year-old’s mom tries to commit suicide—the Off-Broadway production is the focus of the HBO documentary of the same name. (Sept. 16 – Oct. 3, Hillsborough Community College Performing Arts Theater)
  • Open Another one-person play, this one by Crystal Skillman, combines magic and queer issues. (Sept. 16 – Oct. 3, HCC Performing Arts Theater)
  • The Giver Based on the novel by Lois Lowry and also a movie starring Taylor Swift and Meryl Streep—the play revolves around a teenage boy discovering secrets of the dystopian society he lives in. (Nov. 19 – Dec.12, Stageworks Theatre)
  • The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time There’s mystery in this play surrounding a young boy on the autism spectrum—based on the popular novel by Mark Haddon. (Nov. 26 – Dec. 19, Stageworks Theatre)
  • King Lear William Shakespeare’s tragedy about a King slowly going insane after he is forced to step down from the throne. (Feb. 4-20, USF Theatre)

Theater is expensive, and Creative Loafing Tampa Bay devotes editorial budget to writing about it because it’s essential to cover local playwrights, actors and the venues that support them. Support arts journalism in these crazy days and consider making a one time or monthly donation to help support our staff. Every little bit helps.
