The best way to describe Selwyn Birchwood, rising blues star, is an unquenchable fire. Not only does he play guitar and lap-steel, he has raw, unedited strength and soul in his voice that will win anyone over, whether you’re a blues aficionado or not. Passion reverberates through this deeply rooted, funky blues band that started emerging here in Tampa at the Palladium’s Side Door stage back in 2013. Now, Birchwood has won the International Blues Challenge and the Albert King Guitarist of the Year Award. “There’s nothing I’d rather be doing than playing the blues,” Birchwood says, “And I try to convey that with every song and with every performance.”
