Roland Powell, better known by his stage name Lil Duval, is one of the few comedians who might be known primarily for their music career (the “Steve Harvey Show” constantly plays Duval’s “Smile (Living my Best Life)”).
And while locals know him for the “City Boy Wit It” remix he did with Tampa rapper Tom G (and the way they opened the 2019 BET Awards with the song), Powell—who’s also an actor—is actually a really, really big deal in the comedy world.
The Jacksonville native has a weekend special engagement at Tampa’s Improv where he’ll do two shows a night from Friday, April 16 until Sunday, April 18.
All six shows in Ybor City are sold out, but the Improv won’t let you in if your temperature is over 100 degrees, so who knows what happens if you hang around outside. Plus, Improv sold tickets in tables, instead of individual seats, and is offering a full refund if anyone in the group isn’t feeling well, so be on the lookout.
A rep at Improv told Creative Loafing Tampa Bay that if anyone asks for a refund on their tickets, then the tickets would go right back into the online ticketing system.
“The best thing someone can do if they want to come to the show is keep refreshing the website,” the rep said. As of now, there’s been no talk of adding a Thursday or Monday show to the schedule.
Masks are required unless you are eating or drinking one of your two-item minimum choices. Even if you can’t get tickets, take Powell’s advice and “Smile, bitch!”
