Sherman Saxton, a lifelong resident of St. Pete, tells what it's like to experience a close encounter with the police for no reason besides his skin color. By the end, he's not only transformed his pain, he's moved the audience. Afterward he told Creative Loafing, "I am all that I have encountered…whether by travel or academia, [it's all] led me to this storytelling."

True Stories takes place on the second Wednesday of each month. Everyone attending can put their name in the bucket to get the chance to go on stage and tell their story. The next show will be on October 12, and the theme will be "Supernatural." Hear historian Deborah Frethem, author of Ghost Stories of St. Petersburg, Clearwater and Pinellas County, share her own true personal story of otherwordly encounters.

Created by Lisa L. Kirchner, True Stories is a Keep St. Pete Lit event. For a schedule of upcoming shows and themes, go to truestories.cc.
