Fascism is on the brunch menu in Tampa’s University area.

Orlando’s long-running Uncomfortable Brunch film and breakfast series makes the drive across I-4 in April, and has plans to serve up bold, boundary-pushing cinema alongside a boozy brunch beginning Sunday, April 6 at Sun-Ray Cinema, which is part of the new Rithm development.

The monthly event kicks off with Pier Paolo Pasolini’s “Salò, or the 120 Days of Sodom,” an adaption of a novel which depicts torture and dehumanization of adolescents by a fascist aristocracy during the final years of World War 2 in Northern Italy.

For over a decade, Uncomfortable Brunch has cultivated a faithful following in Orlando, by providing venturesome movie lovers a unique opportunity to engage with perturbed, avant-garde cinema over mimosas and breakfast tacos.

Founded by Josh Martin in 2014 alongside Kat Whitacre in 2017, Uncomfortable Brunch was created to encourage audiences to experience difficult art in an unconventional way.

What started as a small gathering with friends by Martin was later adopted by Will’s Pub, which began screening uncomfortable films; the Orlando water hole still screens the films on the first Sunday of each month.

“These movies shouldn’t just be seen because a historian says they should,” a press release says. “They should be seen because they will make you feel something, albeit not necessarily positive, and if we aren’t feeling things, then what are we living for?”

And if you need a sensory palette cleanser, the theatre is also showing the immersive documentary “32 Sounds” on Sunday, Feb. 23, which will provide audience members a chance to partake in sound explorations with headphone sets provided.

Tickets for the first Uncomfortable Brunch, happening Sunday, April 6 at Sun-Ray Cinema in Tampa are still available.

After the first installment, Uncomfortable Brunch will happen on the first Saturday of each month, according to Massett.
