Wakeboard enthusiasts can still catch competitive action at McCormick's Cable Park

The riders take a lap around the lake and finish off with a kicker to complete their turn. Each rider gets two turns and he or she is judged by a three-member team.

As is always whenever you go out to a wakeboard event — whether it’s on a grand scale like the Wake Open or on a smaller level like local tournaments, the scene at McCormick’s was festive.

McCutchen, along with Australian-native Steven Moss, were the emcees and provided a consistently entertaining play-by-play of the action on and off the water.

Liquid Force Wakeboards is the official sponsor of the “Get Railed” Cable Series at McCormick’s, but some local representatives from Monster Energy Drink were kind enough to stop by and hand out a plethora of Rehab beverages to keep spectators, participants, officials and yours truly hydrated.

Moss even dropped a catchy phrase that Monster might want to latch onto: “Don’t dehydrate, Rehydrate with Rehab Monster Energy Drink.” Well, it sounds better with an Australian accent, so do your best Aussie impersonation inside your head as you read this.

Highlights of the event, besides all the gnarly tricks — and falls — included Joey Alm, an employee at McCormick’s, scaling the 50-foot pylon system to change the direction of the cable, a heavy dose of musical mixes from McCutchen and Moss, backflips and can-opener dives off the pier by several of the younger spectators, a plethora of pooches chillin’ like Kevin Dillon on the pier and local pro Billy Parker calling to inform the officials he would make a guest appearance.

“You never know what Billy’s gonna do so it was cool for him to come out and join the party,” said Andrew Proses, who competed against Parker in the pro division. “His tricks are phenomenal and it pushes you to get better, so it was cool he came out. It’s always fun to compete against him.”

Parker became a viral video sensation during Tropical Storm Debby’s presence a few weeks ago when he was captured on a smartphone video leaping over the Redington Shores pier in 50-mph winds with his kiteboard.

If you haven’t been out to McCormick’s to try wakeboarding or to check out the scene, it’s a must. There will be another heat next Tuesday beginning at 4:30 p.m.

Loved the Red Bull Wake Open and still want to see spectacular stunts on the water?

Get out to McCormick's Cable Park in Seffner and check out local athletes compete in the tournament series for the 2012 National Points Chase, a wakeboard competition held at 13 different parks nationwide. McCormick’s Cable Park in Seffner has been holding weekly events since the end of June and will culminate with the region championship on Tuesday, Aug. 7.

“It’s a chance for some of our up-and-coming wakeboarders, along with local pros, to compete against each other in something they do usually do for fun out here,” said Kyle McCutchen, who is in his third year as an employee at McCormick’s.

The Points Chase is in its third year and the national championship will be held at the Barefoot Ski Ranch in Waco, Texas. Last season, the finals were held at McCormick’s.

On Tuesday, there were a bunch of wakeboarders of all skill levels competing in beginner, intermediate, advanced and pro divisions.
