The districts targeted for potential penalties are Alachua, Brevard, Broward, Duval, Hillsborough, Indian River, Leon, Miami-Dade, Orange, Palm Beach and Sarasota counties.

At the University of Central Florida in Orlando, 188 students and 13 employees have tested positive for the virus this month.

In the past two weeks, 205 students and 342 employees at elementary, middle and high schools tested positive for the virus.

As classes in Florida begin to resume on Monday, at least two state universities already have reported COVID-19 cases among students.

“Minimize disruption by isolating only those individuals,” the plan says.

“If you have a COVID-19 case or you have (COVID-19) symptoms, don’t panic,” Corcoran told school superintendents in a conference call Thursday.

As of Thursday, 14,271 state inmates had tested positive for COVID-19, a number that has skyrocketed since mid-July.

DeSantis has been adamant that all school districts should offer in-person instruction in August.

“To reopen all Florida schools before it’s safe is reckless. It is unreasonable.”

DeSantis has faced similar pushback this week about his messaging on reopening schools.

Glady said the department has not “experienced any degradation in security operations as a result of staff absences.”

“How is it logical that it’s not safe for me to go to the gym, but it’s safe for me to send my child to schools?”

The state university system’s Board of Governor has not issued any guidance to universities on how to handle the new federal regulation.
