Listen up, fans of fancier cheese on their grilled cheese sandwiches: In a recent public poll from Ranker (the website for opinion-based, crowdsourced lists of pretty much anything), varieties like fontina, asiago and Brie couldn't stand up to what is perhaps one of the most popular cheeses out there: good ol' Cheddar.
Topping Ranker's survey of the best cheese for a grilled cheese, conducted in observance of April as National Grilled Cheese Month, Cheddar was followed by other household-name cheeses — Monterey Jack, mozzarella, pepper Jack, provolone, American, Muenster and Colby — plus the arguably somewhat more upscale Gouda and Gruyère to round out the top 10.
Of course, what makes one grilled cheese more jazzed up, and tastier, than another comes down to more than just its cheese; bacon and that blackberry-mead sauce from Seminole Heights's Mermaid Tavern matter, too.
