Last week's Frogman Feast at St. Pete brewery 3 Daughters benefited the Navy SEAL Foundation — which provides support and assistance to the families of SEAL team members — to the tune of an estimated $18,000. But 3 Daughters isn't done giving back; this Sunday's Frog Grog Canning Party celebrates both the foundation and late Tampa Bay Times outdoors editor Terry Tomalin, who many know was involved in the community in myriad ways, including the SEAL Foundation's annual Tampa Bay Frogman Swim, next scheduled for January 21, 2018.
3 Daughters put out a Frog Grog for the foundation last year, and this year it felt right for the brewery to honor Tomalin's contributions by adding his name to the label for the 2017 model, a pilsner.
"Terry was fantastic to us and we love [his widow, St. Pete Deputy Mayor] Kanika, so it just makes sense," says 3 Daughters co-owner Leigh Harting. "We're very veteran-friendly, we love to do charity events that honor the military that serves us."
Sunday's $30 ticket gets patrons a chance to see the new brew roll off the canning line and be among the first to give it a taste (along with the brewery's new-ish Floating Dock Light IPA and classic key lime cider), as well as barbecue and games — and also a chance to see the brewery's frankly jaw-dropping Christmas Village, which features thousands of clever, kitschy holiday-season decorations, toys, trains and models. It also offers another opportunity to toast the memory of one of the Bay area's most beloved journalists.
"We were starting to get involved in the swim, and Terry had been coordinating that event with Kurt Ott, and as we were getting more involved, it just made sense to do it in his honor this year," Harting says "It seems a fitting memorial to him."
