VEGGIE DÖNER at DÖÖNER’S
The most underrated 200 block destination in downtown St. Pete with the most underrated sandwiches. Yeah, a traditional döner, among the popular street foods of Europe, features grilled meat and what could be a salad on its own stuffed into a pocket of bread. But here, the vegetarian version — with a variety of veggies, feta and tzatziki spilling out of naan — can also satisfy an omnivore appetite. I live for this Euro-style fast-food sandwich. And it’s pretty damn healthy, too. 21 Third St. N., St. Petersburg, 727-623-4848, doonersus.com. —Meaghan Habuda
GRILLED ZUCCHINI at JUNGLE PRADA TAVERN
West St. Pete is a bit of a dead zone in terms of delicious and filling veg options, especially when it comes to sandwiches. But Jungle Prada Tavern, located on an iconic waterfront site on Park Street rumored to have been a former (and possible otherworldly) haunt of legendary mobster Al Capone, offers a very hearty grilled zucchini sandwich. Served on a ciabatta, the main ingredient is drenched in extra-virgin olive oil and balsamic. A bonus is the side of also-decadent fries. 1700 Park St. N., St. Petersburg, 727-914-7776. —Kate Bradshaw
THE WASHINGTON TURKEY at TRE AMICI @ THE BUNKER
Shout-out to the Times’s Ernest Hooper for recommending the Washington Turkey, which is not a nickname for the current president but a picturesque packet of thin-sliced turkey, perfectly cooked bacon, melted Swiss and Granny Smith apple on toasted wheat bread in Ybor. It’s crunchy, melty, savory, sweet — even healthy (because, apple). 1907 N. 19th St., Tampa, 813-247-6964, bunkerybor.com. —David Warner
THE WANEE at HAWTHORNE BOTTLE SHOPPE
This new Grand Central District hangout has several music fest-themed sandwiches. This one evinces its namesake hippie-fied Florida jam via its vegetarian nature and funky rundown of ingredients: HBS’s own killer pimento cheese (with Cheddar and jalapenos!), sprouts, avocado, tomato and seasonings. 2927 Central Ave., St. Petersburg, 727-800-2810, hbsforlife.com. —Scott Harrell
THE YANKEE at ZUDAR’S ON PLATT
Cold slaw and toasty rye meet a thick slab of sliced deli turkey and Thousand Island dressing, which amounts to a non-’krauty, much healthier version of a Reuben. The only negative about this one is the fact that it makes me think of some jagoff in a pinstriped baseball uni waving his World Series rings in the face of the Tampa Bay Rays. 201 W. Platt St., Tampa, 813-250-6272, zudars.com. —Ray Roa
