Earlier this summer, The Restorative owners Cricket and Jason Borajkiewicz opened small bites concept Side Piece inside of Caledonia Brewing. At the time, the restaurateurs were trying to figure out how to make the pivot from dine-in to takeout only. This spring, Jason told Creative Loafing Tampa Bay that he and Cricket anticipated moving to takeout if that meant canceling a few dine-in reservations.

“To change our model and pivot quickly wasn’t that difficult. Our sales have dropped, but so have our costs. The first couple of weeks our regulars definitely came in and really supported us, but honestly we’re seeing a lot of new faces since switching to takeout. It’s surprising,” he said.

But this time of year is the season of giving, so on Sunday, Nov. 29, Side Piece is teaming up with Madison Avenue Pizza for a fundraiser benefiting Dunedin Cares Inc. The food pantry, which feeds food insecure neighborhoods in Dunedin and surrounding areas, has seen a 400% increase in families seeking food since March.

Customers can come in to Side Piece and order a special sandwich, featuring Madison Avenue’s meatballs, mozzarella, and roasted and pickled peppers, for $14 until supplies last (each sandwich already comes with chips so make it a full meal with beer or wine from Caledonia). If you make a donation to Dunedin Cares Inc., you get 10% off your order. The sandwich is available for dine-in or takeout, but Side Piece recommends coming in for lunch to ensure you get one in case supplies run out.

In an email to CL, Cricket said donations will still be taken until they close Sunday night and a Dunedin Cares Inc. donation drop box will remain at Side Piece until the end of December.

Side Piece is located at Caledonia Brewing in Dunedin at 587 Main St. Hours of operation are Sat.-Sun. noon-9 p.m. and Wed.-Fri. 5 p.m.- 9 p.m.
