Mr. Penguin, a new frozen treats parlor at 1920 W. Platt St., plans to hold its soft opening the first week of December, according to owner Dave Lee.
Nestled near Drynk, Hyde Park Cafe and other after-hours hotspots, the indoor-outdoor shop's offerings will include gelato, soft-serve and Italian ice.
The fast-casual BurgerFi chain launched its first Tampa restaurant late last month at 714 S. Howard Ave. It's located on the ground floor of the neighborhood's Post SoHo Square apartment complex.
The eatery adds to the Bay area's increasing number of gourmet burger-slinging franchises, a lineup that Burger 21 and Square 1 Burgers & Bar are also a part of.
BurgerFi focuses on chemical- and additive-free beef, with items such as its quinoa burger between a multigrain bun and the Angus patty with fried egg, hash browns and maple syrup.
Diners chowing outside along the restaurant's patio told CL the onion rings and fries, which may be topped with ingredients like Parmesan and Cajun spices, are killer.
Next door at 718 S. Howard Ave., Michael Stewart and Joe Maddon's Ava restaurant is holding reservations-only test kitchens through Tuesday to showcase its fare, which boasts a just handful of fine ingredients.
The Italian eatery officially debuts next Friday.
And much to late-night grubbers' dismay, Meaner Wiener, purveyor of soul-warming hot dogs and hand-spun shakes, closed its doors at 500 S. Howard Ave. after more than a year.
