In 2017, the Sunshine State helped collect 71 million pounds of grub during the National Association of Letter Carriers’ Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive. That’s why — with the 26th annual event coming up — residents shouldn’t pass up on this year’s day of do-goodery.
Florida, after all, has been ranked the No. 1 state for can donations over the past decade.
Joining forces with the NALC, Farm Share acts as the official Florida charity partner for Stamp Out Hunger, which takes place across the country to alleviate food insecurity and hunger next month. The Homestead-based nonprofit is known for teaming up with Florida farmers to recover imperfect produce that would otherwise be thrown away, because aesthetics.
All residents have to do to participate in Stamp Out Hunger is load the Farm Share bags left in their mailboxes with nonperishable goods, then leave the bags next to their mailboxes before the regular mail delivery on May 12 — when letter carriers and volunteers will collect donations.
Contributions to the nation’s largest one-day food drive are distributed back into local communities by Farm Share and its 2,000 partners across the state.
“Stamp Out Hunger provides Floridians with an easy way to make a big impact locally,” according to a statement from Stephen Shelley, chief operating officer for Farm Share. “Farm Share is excited to assist with the collection and distribution of the donations, as it’s our top priority to fight hunger and provide Florida communities with nutritious food.”
