No, Chronic Tacos isn't a symptom that wreaks havoc on those who haven't consumed their recommended amount of tacos every two hours. But it is a California-based Mexican grill franchise that's set to open its first Tampa Bay restaurant in Tampa.
Chronic Tacos franchisee Joseph Mouannes is behind the new-to-market brand's latest location, going in at 10420 N. Dale Mabry Highway. Though details are slim, the new restaurant is expected to launch in the beginning of summer. The franchise operates more than 40 restaurants throughout the U.S. and Canada.
Known for its laid-back vibe and generous portions of made-to-order recipes, Chronic Tacos has built a menu of tacos, bowls, burritos (including the breakfast variety), nachos and seemingly everything in between (think flautas, tortas and fries), customized with a diner's choice of fillings or toppings.
Highlights include a build-your-own 13-inch burrito, churro bites and potato tacos, a.k.a. heaven — corn tortillas filled with mashed potatoes and cheese that get the deep-fried treatment. Vegan and gluten-free items are available, too.
The brand, which started in 2002 and has multiple Florida franchisees, plans to open between three and four locations in the Sunshine State this year. Tampa could also be the first Chronic Tacos for the state if the south Fort Myers restaurant doesn't debut first.
