All Hail Tampa w/The Hails/King Complex/Coastals/Kodiac A band with roots in Tampa finally plays a Bay area show, and if a February single (“Younger”) by The Hails’ 2017 EP (Impel) is any indication, then we’re guessing that this won’t be the last time quintet brings its polished, lush indie-pop to this neck of the woods. King Complex, Coastals and brother-sister act Kodiac (fka Drake & Sophia) — three more bands with equally well put-together aesthetics that range from experimental rock to pop — open the show, which also includes live art. Summer of Soul: Nate Najar’s Bossa Nova Guitars w/Phil Fest Last week saw Palladium’s Summer of Soul series expose its jazz heart, and this Friday-night installment invites revered Bay area guitarist Nate Najar to add some bossa nova into the mix alongside Brazilian guitarist and composer Phil Fest. Bassist Alejandro Arenas and drummer Mark Feinman round out the ensemble. (Side Door Cabaret at Palladium Theater, St. Petersburg);SOLD OUT
✔️ Champagne Superchillin’ w/Glove/Fever Beam By now, we’re all conditioned to the idea that The Bends is good for at least three or four stupid-good rock shows a month, but even this one featuring Superchillin’ — a Serge Gainsbourg-worshipping new wave/pop band fronted by French expat Juliette Buchs — came out of left field. The group’s new album, Beach Deep, brushes a psychedelic haze on top of salt-licked riffs and steamy production on the way to crossing the finishing line as what should be one of the year’s best albums. It’s dark, beautiful music in a swanky dive where Glove and Fever Beam — two bands CL recently featured in its 30 Under 30 Music Issue — open the show with B-52s-style, dance floor-ready new wave and some of the most refreshing country-rock and blues we’ve heard in a long time. Somehow, some way, there is no cover for this late-night affair. The show coincides with the opening of a postcard show by St. Petersburg artist Jacqueline Amick. Miranda Lambert w/Little Big Town/Turnpike Troubadours/Tenille Townes Miranda Lambert didn’t do any press in support of her post-divorce 2016 album, The Weight of These Wings, and the 34-year-old country songwriter didn’t have to. She’d already been through hell over that shit that The Voice cheeseball Blake Shelton pulled, and the record pretty much puts it all out there for fans to deal with. We’re expecting her to play some of the more painful Wings cuts at this one (“Vice” or “Tin Man,” anyone?) where Little Big Town pretty much co-headlines the show. ✔️ Beatsnchill 2-Year Anniversary w/Dray Davinchy/Tyven/Betty Dawl/TheyHateChange/Wally Clark/DJ Raul Clearwater rapper Dray Davinchy will take the stage as Beatsnchill sets its sights on a group of producers — Trapfone’s Betty Dawl, fresh-faced Tyven tha Producer plus Andre Gainey and John Harrison of They Hate Change — to help celebrate the two-year anniversary of the beat-centric monthly. The party is embracing Tampa Bay Comic Con as well and encouraging cosplay at the free-to-attend event. (The Bricks, Ybor City)INFO
✔️ Jeremih w/Teyana Taylor/DaniLeigh It’s been nearly a decade since Jeremih brought the notion of “Birthday Sex” to the mainstream, and at 31 years old, it looks like the Chicago singer and rapper is just entering his prime. A guest spot on producer RL Grime’s new album finds Jeremih next to the likes of Miguel, Tory Lanez and even Ty Dolla $ign, who is working with Jeremih on a collaborative album, MihTy, which finally has a release date (August 24). ‘Mih’s 2015 breakthrough Late Nights still sounds as vital to R&B as it did back in 2015, and we’re expecting to hear a lot of it when he arrives in Ybor City alongside Pharrell Williams protegé Teyana Taylor plus Florida native and Def Jam Records signee DaniLeigh.
