Brian Wilson's September 2016 Pet Sounds show at Mahaffey Theater was supposed to be the last time fans got to see the Beach Boy play songs from the iconic 1966 album live in and in person.

The enigmatic 75-year-old songwriter and composer flipped that idea on its head when he announced another round of Pet Sounds dates, including one on May 18 at Clearwater's Ruth Eckerd Hall. Well, ticketholders' hopes of seeing that happen are going to have to make those thoughts go away for awhile.

On Tuesday, Wilson took to Twitter to tell fans that a back problem requiring surgery would cause nine shows — including that May 18 show in Clearwater — to be postponed. Shows in Viera (May 19 at Space Coast Daily Park) and Pompano Beach (May 20 at Pompano Beach Amphitheatre) have also been postponed.

UPDATE: WIlson has announced that the show has been rescheduled for November 10. Visit rutheckerdhall.com for details.

Wilson said that the back problem — for which he’s had surgery at least once before, in 2012 — “runs in the family."

"[My brother] Carl had back problems as well," he wrote, adding that the problem has “very recently gotten worse.”

Thankfully, the rescheduling process is already underway. Ruth Eckerd Hall wrote that it will honor existing tickets on the new date.

"Please know that the music is in my heart and in my soul and me and the boys are looking forward to performing for you very soon," he wrote.
