Dead South frontman Nate Hilts grew up in Regina, Saskatchewan, listening to his parents’ music. “I listened to Neil Young and Meatloaf and Neil Diamond,” he says. “When I got out on my own, it was Zeppelin and the Doors. After classic rock came punk and grunge and the world kept opening up more each time.”
His band band picked up an unexpected hit in 2016 when an old video for “In Hell I’ll Be in Good Company” took hold, and Hilts’ country-bluegrass outfit eventually ended up in Muscle Shoals to record its latest album, Sugar & Joy, which it released in October 2019.
