Tampa Bay’s DIY community is once again bringing touring acts from out of town into small spaces. The Bay area’s local bands are also hard at work. Here’s a rundown of some of the best small shows coming to our cities this week. Read on and see a full listing below.
Community Couch w/Boston Marriage/Snacking/Floating Boy/irefusetobesadforever It’s your last chance to dance with Community Couch. The ukulele-driven folk-punk band is calling it quits and has booked one last show at the venue that’s been the band’s home since its inception. Songs from a new EP, Save the Sad Dance For Me, should get feet moving, but we’re still shimmying to the sounds of “T+,” which was written in the days after Tampa Pride 2016. “Well, I’m all for pride, and I’m all for fighting the man, but if you’re so goddamned inclusive, why can’t you include ‘they/them?,’” principal songwriter Stove sings in describing feeling all alone and out of step on a crowded 7th Avenue. “You added a pink stripe to your flag, but you can’t act like you added anyone at all.”It’s an interesting sentiment to think about as Pride weekend reminds us how far we’ve all come since Stonewall. It’s definitely sad to know that Community Couch has reached the end of its road. Fri., June 21. 8 p.m. $8. Lucky You Tattoo, Pinellas Park. luckyyou.tattoo.
Closet Goth w/Clang!/Laundromat/Shakers New D.I.Y. promotions duo Swamp Sister just had its first show last Friday and already has two concerts lined up this week. The first happens this Friday and finds Phoenix-based party-punk band Closet Goth bringing a bouncy brand of weirdo hardcore music to a house show where a couple of CL favorites (Clang!, Laundromat) play alongside Emotion Boys indie-tronica project Shakers. Bring donations for the touring bands and a willingness to park on the lawn when you get to the show. More information on Swamp Sisters’ Sunday-night show in St. Petersburg is available on social media. Fri., June 21. 7 p.m. Donations accepted. In-Between, Tampa. INFO.
Florida Rules Fest Pre-Show w/Slap of Reality/Coldside/Foul Play/Murkov/Wrested/Haily Taylor/Joshua Creek/Art of Defeat More than two dozen punk, hardcore and metal bands will be in Brandon when Florida Rules Fest hits the Noise Box on Saturday, but organizers are giving fans a chance to get started early at this pre-show where eight non-Fest bands — including old-school, recently reunited punk act Slap of Reality — will hit the stage at the Brass Mug for a show that’s a little easier on the wallet, too. Fri., June 21. 6 p.m. $3. Brass Mug, Tampa. bigcartel.com.
Reconciler w/Debt Neglector/Rutterkin/Old Vices Fans of Against Me! or New Junk City might want to try and find this St. Petersburg Tampa D.I.Y. spot on Saturday. That’s where Atlanta pop-punk band Reconciler will play songs from a promising new debut LP, Set Us Free. Punk favorites from Tampa Bay (Old Vices, Rutterkin) and Orlando (Debt Neglector) play support. Sat., June 22. 7 p.m. Donations accepted. The Dog House, St. Petersburg. INFO.
