Concert review: The Flaming Lips bring psychedelic love, big sprays of confetti, a space bubble, philosophical waxing, and more to Jannus Live in St. Petersburg (with photos)

More than three years after the Flaming Lips’ much-talked-about confetti explosion at Jannus, the experimental Midwestern ensemble brought their acid-washed stage show back to the now re-vamped venue last Wednesday night, a stop to make-up for the date they missed here in May due to multi-instrumentalist Steven Drozd’s mysterious (re: not-talked-about or explained) hospitalization. As much as I came to this show bitter(ish) that an interview with frontman Wayne Coyne was dangled in front of me like so much tasty bait only to never happen, and cynical that it'd be the same outrageous stage show I've seen on multiple occasions in the past, I was impressed. Won over, even, though I already love the band.

There are always certain givens at a Flaming Lips show, those elements that will never change, or only be expanded upon.
