Today in rock history: On this date in 1970, Déjà Vu, Crosby, Stills & Nash’s sophomore album (and its first with Neil Young in the lineup) was released under the “CSNY” moniker. It went to no. 1 on the Billboard pop albums chart, produced several hit singles ("Our House,” "Teach Your Children,” the Joni Mitchell-penned "Woodstock") and has, to date, sold more than 8 million copies. Extremely notable is the inclusion of the Young classic "Helpless," which made its debut on this record.

Today in rock history: On this date in 1975, Alice Cooper’s eighth album, Welcome to My Nightmare, was released and became what’s widely regarded as Cooper’s solo debut. Nightmare found the rocker ditching his longtime band and enlisting members of Lou Reed’s band to help him create a concept record about the nightmares of a character named Steven; the album peaked at no. 5 on the Billboard pop chart, scored Cooper a TV-special (Alice Cooper: The Nightmare), and led to a world tour fueled by the success of singles like "Only Women Bleed" and "Department of Youth.”

Today in rock history: On this date in 1977, T. Rex released its 12th and last album, Dandy in the Underworld. After enduring a sales slump in the mid-’70's, frontman Marc Bolan returned to form, scored a couple of singles ( "I Love to Boogie" and "The Soul of My Suit") and even went on tour with The Damned. Bolan, sadly, died in a car accident six months after the release of the album.

Today in rock history: On this date in 1955, punk-rock and new wave singer-songwriter and actress Nina Hagen was born in East Berlin, Germany. She went on to influence countless artists drawn to underground dance hits and gay club staples like “New York, New York” and “Universal Radio.”
