How many bars is David Dondero punching in this election season? That's something the CL music camp has been wondering lately, but we're also wondering what he's been up to these. Now we have something of an answer…sort of.
DO THIS: AGAINST ME! OPENS FOR BAD RELIGION AT JANNUS LIVE 10.12.16
The 47-year-old songwriter who famously song-i-fied Ybor City chickens in "South of the South" was apparently in north Florida four years ago when he ran into Against Me! frontwoman Laura Jane Grace who invited Dondero to come check out her new studio. The two are old friends who once played a Gainesville, Florida laundromat together once, so the visit was a no brainer.
“It was a happy accident,” Dondero said in a press release. “I just came in, checked out the studio and she was like, ‘You wanna play a couple songs?’ So I played these songs then had to go onto Orlando, and that was that. We ended up recording all six songs in just about an hour. I think we did them all in one take and then they were shelved when the studio closed after being crushed by a falling tree.”
The songs eventually ended up on Dondero's 2013 LP This Guitar, but the versions on With Love are the ones recorded in Grace's studio, which doesn't exist anymore since it was crushed by a falling tree.
“I’m really thankful she’s putting this out.” Dondero says. “I like the songs better with no revision to the lyrics and I was surprised how good the recording sounded. It’s more truthful to the original idea. I like what we did to them on This Guitar, too, but the original versions I think are a little more to the heart.”
