Live in the Middle East is an essential concert document of what Dinosaur Jr. was and still is. Filmed in 2005 during the start of its reunion tour, the original lineup tears through 17 tracks from its first three records (plus one track that came out after Lou Barlow was booted from the band). The guys are in top form, playing and sounding better than ever. Back-in-the-fold Barlow's melodic/aggressive bass and Murph's spot-on drumming provide a taut enough anchor line to balance J Mascis' mesmerizing guitar. This is a must-have for old and new fans — a DVD that should be experienced with the Surround Sound on and the volume cranked. —Gabe Loewenberg
