DTCV w/Sad Shibas Here’s one you’re not going to believe. Jim Greer, a novelist, screenwriter, and former SPIN magazine editor is coming to play the Hub in Tampa. If his name sounds familiar it’s because Greer also played bass in Guided by Voices during the Alien Lanes and Under the Bushes Under the Stars era. He left after that, but good on him though as his current destination finds him creating tunes with French stoner-pop singer Lola G. under the DTCV banner (pronounce it “detective”). The pair arrive at this downtown dive in support of Confusione Moderne, an album born out of time spent listening to Brian Jonestown Massacre’s Musique de film imaginé and listening to French zydeco. It’s exactly kind of poppy, retro post-punk stuff now grown up GBV fans can’t turn off, and to top it all off it’s all delivered en français. (The Hub, Tampa) INFO

Gov’t Mule In Gov't Mule’s new video, the Warren Haynes’ southern jam rock outfit cover ZZ Top’s “Just Got Paid, ” one of the first tracks they recorded together. Haynes and the boys paint the visuals with director Tomek Zwlazlak’s animated paintbrush for the cut, which is taken off the the Mule’s latest legacy release, The Tel-Star Sessions. The set features a remixed and remastered collection of 1994 demos that’ve never seen formal release. The band have started to drop hints about their Mule-O-Ween show, and while it’s still a month ago, fans will have their fingers crossed for deeper cuts off of that show’s setlist. Empire Cinema w/Ninehorn In case you missed it, Green Bench Brewing Co.’s Surrealist IPA is back. A few glasses of this beauty of a beer is going to pair very well with Empire Cinema’s new wave-noir. St. Pete’s own Ninehorn are on this bill and still fighting the good fight of trying to get Foo Fighter’s Dave Grohl to be in their new music video. There haven’t been any updates since CL blogged about it, but that won’t matter on Saturday when Ninehorn frontman Dr. Chase Swann & co. bring their ballsy, Queens of the Stone age toasting rock & roll to the beer garden. Coeds w/MRENC/Dawns Just about one month ago, CL premiered a video where COEDS upped the ante on the ever so common lyric videos bands are releasing these days. The Savannah, Georgia garage-pop outfit arrives in town on Friday to bring that song, and more off of their new album Thrill Me!, to life for this show which serves as their Tampa Bay area release show (local indie imprint New Granada Records is releasing the effort). What’s more is that central Florida’s own Eric Collins — a.k.a. MRENC from Orlampa, Florida (aka Auburndale) — will also be celebrating the vinyl release of his second full length record, The Lesser Light. Collins’ Circling release (which we reviewed on cltampa.com/music this week) is one of the most unique physical releases we’ve ever put our hands on, so we’re excited to see what the new product brings to the merch table. Socks N Sandals w/Ugly God/Ski Mask/The Slump God/more We’ll use any excuse to grub on some tacos from Ybor City’s Mic Deluxx, but this trap music bill featuring Ugly God, who recently teamed up with another fast-rising rap star Lil Yachty on “Rari Rari,” make a trip to Crowbar a no-brainer. The video for Mr. God’s viral sensation “Bernie Sanders” is a must watch clip that should win an Emmy for YouTube meme of the year, and while rap elders have a hard time wrapping their heads around the allure of guys like Yachty and Ugly God, showing up to this one means you get to find host Betty Dawl leading a room full of turnt up twenty something losing their shit at every turn. Netsky w/Christian Alexander/Nate Verde Before the summer’s heat really took hold, NPR lauded Boris Daenen for moving away from his drum-and-bass roots on a 1970’s-era disco, infused cut “TNT” where the Belgian producer better known as Netsky enlisted French electro-pop duo Chromeo to set the track on fire. Later in the season, the 27-year-old upped the ante on himself by reworking his own track, “Rio,” just in time for the summer games in Brazil. Macklemore jumped on the remix, which served as an unofficial anthem for the olympiad, which worked out great since Netsky was his country’s musical ambassador at the games. Skipper’s 36th Anniversary Party w/Applebutter Express/Steve Connelly and the Greater Good/Dukes of Juke/Ras Sparrow & Wildfire Roots Band/more With the University of South Florida less than three miles away, there’s no doubt that thousands of musically adventurous students spent at least part of their undergraduate careers coming of age underneath the safety of the Skipperdome (Skipper’s Smokehouse’s canopy of giant oak trees). Many of those kids will bring that spirit (perhaps with kids of their own) back for the 36th anniversary of the long-running venue. The celebration runs all-day, which means that you could very well have lunch with your kids, then get them back home and to a sitter before coming back and closing the bar alongside a collection of a dozen bands like swamp-grass favorites Applebutter Express and Grateful Dead tribute band Uncle John’s Band. In typically populist fashion, Skipper’s is waiving the cover charge for this one, too. (Skipper’s Smokehouse, Tampa) INFO
