Adrian Belew

Adrian Belew

Progressive rock guitar virtuoso and vocalist Adrian Belew hasn't enjoyed much in the way of mainstream success, but as a session artist, he's contributed to innumerable albums, from hallmark quality (like Talking Heads' Remain in Light and Paul Simon's Graceland), to lesser-known-but-still-worthy endeavors, among them, Nine Inch Nails' The Downward Spiral. He toured with David Bowie and Frank Zappa (you may remember him from Baby Snakes, Zappa's bizarre 1979 concert film), became one of the few lasting members of King Crimson's ever-changing lineup — and even he joined more than a decade after the original band was formed — and released a huge catalog of solo material featuring his distinctive avant-garde style and technical prowess. He revisits St. Petersburg with his power trio this Friday night. New York-based alt-pop rocker Saul Zonana provides support. Fri., Aug. 24, 9 p.m., State Theatre, 687 Central Ave., St. Petersburg, $20 in advance/$25 day of show, 727-895-3045, statetheatreconcerts.com.
