✔️ Mountain Goats w/Al Riggs Mountain Goats devotees are excellent examples of indie-rock fandom done right, and disciples of frontman John Darnielle’s hyper-literate style of storytelling even have a podcast about their obsession (I Only Listen to the Mountain Goats, which is a collaboration between the über-popular Night Vale Presents, the band and Merge Records). The show finds Joseph Fink, creator of Welcome to Night Vale and Alice Isn’t Dead, in conversation with Darnielle, and Season One explores the stories behind the Mountain Goats’ album All Hail West Texas. Expect a healthy, possibly sold-out crowd when Mountain Goats plays Ybor City in support of a 2017 album, Goths. North Carolina songwriter Al Riggs — touring behind The Complete Works of Sister Viktorine, a batch of 2014 songs he wrote during a rough patch of his life — opens the show. (Orpheum, Ybor City) SOLD OUT

Summer of Rum w/Sugar Ray/the Wailers Day one of downtown Tampa’s Summer of Rum Festival where Sugar Ray headlines (the Wailers play Saturday) as a healthy bill of locals opens both days. See more in our slideshow featuring a bunch of non-sucky songs about rum. (Curtis Hixon Waterfront Park, Tampa) INFO

Jeezy It’d be kinda stupid to keep calling Jay Wayne Jenkins “Young Jeezy” (he’s 40 years old now, after all), so the world is sticking to “Jeezy,” and the Atlanta rapper is going to play a late-night set at Carrollwood area nightclub Whiskey North. His final album Thug Motivation 104 is in the works, and so is a documentary about his life. No telling if there’ll be cameras on-site at this show, but this may be your best chance at ever ending up on Netflix. (Whiskey North, Tampa) INFO

Orgy w/Motograter You’re not delirious. Orgy — a ’90s rock band now led by lone original member Jay Gordon — is coming to headline Tampa’s Brass Mug. Austin, Texas nu-metal band Motograter opens the show. (Brass Mug, Tampa) INFO

MUSIC ISSUE 2018
St. Petersburg garage-rock duo Jensen Serf Company has been making a lo-fi raucous for what feels like forever

✔️ Gino & The Goons w/Jensen Serf Co./Kevin K Band Three strains of homegrown rock (old-school NYC punk from Kevin K, garage-rock from Jensen Serf Co. and some good tried-and-true rock and roll from Gino & the Goons) all come together for a late-night, no-cover concert at The Bends, where you can probably earn a hangover with legs strong enough to carry itself into the Monday holiday. (The Bends, St. Petersburg) INFO

Streetcar Live w/Tribal Style You could go see long-running Tampa roots-reggae outfit Tribal Style at downtown Tampa’s Summer of Rum festival on Sunday (read more on that to the right), or you could hop a trolley and see the quartet bringing laid-back vibes to passengers taking part in one of Tampa Bay’s most unique concert experiences. Saturday rides are free nowadays, so early arrival (departure is 5 p.m.) at the Centennial Park station in Ybor City is recommended. (TECO Streetcar Line, Ybor City) INFO

St. Petersburg songwriter Blake Daniels is finally sharing his songs

Hit Me With Your Best Shot w/The Young Something/Shevonne Philidor/Honeywhat/Blake Daniels/Pleasures/Bendy Straw/Kerry Courtney/American Supermodel A recurring showcase of young talent curated by Tampa community radio station WMNF 88.5 FM presents one of its most eclectic lineups to date. The selling point on “Hit Me With Your Best Shot” is that the sets are only 20 minutes long, which is great if you like your concerts to have that hit-it-and-quit-it, bang-bang vibe and still acceptable if you like to see your local bands get just a little more stage time.
