
There’s no shortage of places to see live jazz in Tampa Bay. Creative Loafing Tampa Bay counted nearly four dozen in our 2019 music issue, and trumpeter Jason Charos—the cover artist from that collection of stories—is back in town to give music fans a reason to soak in the sounds of his quintet, which includes Kendric McCallister (tenor sax), Cole Hazlitt (vibraphone), Joe Porter (bass) and John Jenkins (drums).

Charos has done a lot since his last Studio@620 set—including graduating from Miami’s Frost School of Music, playing on a Grammy-winning album, and laying down horns for a fantastic psych-rock record by St. Pete band The Venus—so it’ll be fun to watch him work through originals plus works by Lee Morgan, Jackie McLean, and Max Roach for a set of music which promises to “focus on the themes of social justice, protest, and cultural identity.”
